Timber Vanity Essentials

Custom solid timber vanity Sydney — BA Furniture

If you've been searching for a timber vanity in Sydney that's built to actually last, not just look good in a showroom, you're in the right place.

At BA Furniture, every vanity we make is crafted entirely from solid timber. Not veneer. Not MDF with a timber finish. Solid timber, through and through.

Why Solid Timber, Not Veneer, Not MDF

Most vanities on the market are made with MDF cores and timber veneer — a thin layer of real wood glued over engineered board. It looks like timber. But it doesn't behave like timber.

Solid timber moves with your home. It can be sanded, refinished, and repaired. A solid timber vanity bought today can look just as good in 30 years with proper care. A veneer vanity cannot.

We build our vanities from solid timber species including blackbutt, spotted gum, American oak, and walnut, species chosen for their durability, grain character, and how they respond to the bathroom environment.

Every Drawer Is Solid Timber, Including the Box

This is something most people don't think to ask, but it makes a significant difference.

In most custom joinery, the cabinet body is solid timber but the drawer boxes are made from plywood or MDF. At BA Furniture, the entire drawer, sides, back, and front, is made from the same solid timber as the vanity itself.

We join every drawer using traditional dovetail joinery. Dovetail joints are the benchmark of quality cabinetmaking, they create a mechanical interlock that gets stronger under load, and they're virtually impossible to pull apart. When you open a BA Furniture drawer, you'll see the dovetail joints at each corner. That's craftsmanship you can see and feel.

Blum Movento Runners, Built for Solid Timber Drawers

Solid timber drawers are heavier than their plywood equivalents. That's why we exclusively use Blum Movento runners, a full-extension, soft-close runner system engineered specifically for heavy drawer boxes.

Blum Movento runners offer smooth, silent operation regardless of drawer weight, full extension so you can access the entire drawer, integrated soft-close that prevents slamming, and a system rated for decades of daily use.

When you combine solid timber drawer boxes with Blum Movento hardware, you get a drawer that feels as precise on day one as it does in year ten.

Stone Tops Available on Every Vanity

We can supply and fit a stone top on any of our vanities, integrated into the design from the beginning, not added as an afterthought.

Popular options include Calacatta marble, engineered stone, and honed granite. The stone is templated and cut to match your vanity exactly, with cutouts for undermount or inset basins as required. If you already have a stone supplier, we can work with your slab. If not, we can guide you through selection.

Osmo Wood Protector, Extremely Water Repellent

A timber vanity in a bathroom needs the right finish. We treat all our vanities with Osmo Wood Protector, a microporous hardwax-oil finish that is extremely water repellent while allowing the timber to breathe naturally.

Unlike film-forming lacquers that sit on top of the timber and crack over time, Osmo penetrates into the wood fibres and bonds from within. Water beads off the surface. Steam from showers won't raise the grain. And if the finish ever wears in a high-use area, it can be spot-repaired without stripping the entire vanity.

Osmo is food-safe, low VOC, and used by professional finishers worldwide. It's the right product for solid timber in a wet environment.

Configurations and Pricing

We make every vanity to order, so configuration is completely up to you.

Drawer configuration, all-drawer vanities offer maximum storage and tend to be our most popular option. Drawer-heavy builds require more material and more joinery time, so they sit at the higher end of our pricing.

Door configuration, vanities with hinged doors are simpler to build and generally more affordable. We use quality soft-close hinges on all door configurations.

Combined configurations, a mix of drawers and doors is common for double vanities, where you might want drawers on one side and open shelving or doors on the other.

Pricing varies based on timber species, configuration, dimensions, and whether a stone top is included. We encourage you to get in touch for a custom quote, most enquiries get a response within one business day.

How Long Does a Custom Timber Vanity Take to Build?

Most vanities take between 4 and 8 weeks from confirmed order to delivery, depending on complexity, timber availability, and whether a stone top is included. We'll give you a clear lead time when you enquire.

Can I Choose My Own Timber Species?

Yes. We work with a range of Australian and imported hardwoods. Popular choices include blackbutt, a pale Australian hardwood with subtle grain that works well in modern and coastal bathrooms, spotted gum with warm golden tones and distinctive figuring, American oak with consistent straight grain and a clean contemporary feel, and American walnut with dark rich tones that looks exceptional in a modern or japandi-style bathroom. If you have a species in mind that isn't listed, ask us. We can usually source it.

Do You Make Double Vanities?

Yes. Double vanities are one of our most requested configurations. We build them as a single continuous unit or as two separate cabinets placed side by side, whichever suits your plumbing layout.

Can You Match My Existing Timber Flooring or Furniture?

We can try. Bring us a sample of your flooring or furniture and we'll work to match the species and finish as closely as possible. Exact matches aren't always achievable across different timber batches, but we can get very close.

Do You Deliver Outside Sydney?

We're based in Sydney but have delivered to Melbourne, Brisbane, and regional NSW. Delivery costs vary by location, ask us when you enquire.

Is solid timber suitable for a bathroom?

Yes, with the right finish. Osmo Wood Protector makes our vanities extremely water repellent. Solid timber has been used in bathrooms for generations, the key is a quality finish and reasonable ventilation. Avoid leaving standing water on the surface for extended periods.

How do I care for a solid timber vanity?

Wipe up spills promptly. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Osmo finishes can be refreshed with a light application of Osmo Polyx-Oil if the surface becomes dull over time.

What's the difference between solid timber and engineered timber?

Solid timber is cut directly from a log, the grain runs all the way through. Engineered timber uses a thin veneer of real wood bonded over a core of MDF or plywood. Engineered timber is more dimensionally stable but cannot be refinished and has a much shorter lifespan.

Can I see samples before I order?

Yes. We can provide timber and finish samples so you can see how the species looks in your bathroom before committing.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. We stand behind our work. Contact us for warranty details specific to your order.

Can I supply my own basin or tapware?

Absolutely. Many clients source their own basin, tapware, and accessories. Just let us know the specifications and we'll design the vanity around them.

What's the minimum size vanity you make?

We've made vanities as small as 450mm wide for compact bathrooms and ensuite powder rooms. There's no standard minimum, if it can be built in timber, we can build it.

Timber Vanities, What to Look for When Buying

If you're comparing suppliers, here are the questions worth asking: Is the carcass solid timber or MDF/plywood? Are the drawer boxes solid timber or plywood? What joinery method is used for the drawers? What drawer runner brand and model is specified? What finish is applied and how does it perform in wet areas? Is the stone top included or quoted separately? What's the lead time and what does the delivery process look like?

A supplier confident in their product will answer all of these without hesitation. If you ask us any of these questions, we'll give you a straight answer, and show you the details in person if you want to visit the workshop.
