The Timber Guide

Timber planks stacked in a woodworking workshop — BA Furniture Sydney

At BA Furniture, every piece starts with a single decision: the timber. It's the most important choice you'll make, and the one that shapes everything — the colour, the character, the feel, and how your furniture ages over time.

We work with five timbers. Here's what you need to know about each one.

American White Oak

Our most popular timber — and for good reason.

American White Oak is the timber we work with most, and it's easy to see why. It has a clean, straight grain with a warm, pale tone that sits beautifully in both modern and classic interiors. It's hard, durable, and takes a finish exceptionally well.

It's the timber we recommend most often to customers who aren't sure where to start. It works in almost any space, pairs well with a wide range of colours and materials, and ages gracefully over time — developing a richer, slightly honey tone as the years go by.

If you're looking for a dining table, entertainment unit, or bedroom piece that will feel at home in your space for decades, American White Oak is a safe and stunning choice.

Best for: dining tables, bedroom furniture, entertainment units, vanities Colour: pale warm tones, light honey Character: clean, straight grain with subtle figuring

American Walnut

Rocky's personal favourite — and one of the most beautiful timbers in the world.

American Walnut is rich, dark, and deeply characterful. Its chocolate-brown tones with purple and grey undertones make it one of the most visually striking timbers available, and no two pieces are ever alike. The grain can range from straight to wildly figured, with natural variations that give each piece a completely unique personality.

It's also one of the most pleasurable timbers to work with — it cuts cleanly, holds detail beautifully, and finishes to a depth that other timbers simply can't match.

American Walnut sits at the higher end of our timber pricing, and for good reason. It's a premium material that produces furniture with a real sense of luxury and presence.

Best for: dining tables, sideboards, desks, statement pieces Colour: rich chocolate brown with warm undertones Character: dramatic grain, deep lustre, highly figured

Tasmanian Blackwood

Australia's answer to Walnut.

Tasmanian Blackwood is one of Australia's most prized native timbers. It shares some of Walnut's warmth and depth, but with its own distinct character — a golden-brown base with darker streaks and occasional ribbon-like figuring that catches the light beautifully.

Blackwood is incredibly versatile. It can look rustic and organic or refined and contemporary depending on how it's used and finished. It's also sustainably harvested from Tasmanian forests, making it a choice you can feel good about.

For customers who want the richness of a dark timber but with a distinctly Australian character, Blackwood is often the answer.

Best for: entertainment units, sideboards, bedroom furniture, vanities Colour: golden brown with dark streaks and warm highlights Character: ribbon figuring, lustrous, highly individual

Blackbutt

A quintessentially Australian hardwood.

Blackbutt is one of the most widely used Australian hardwoods, and it's easy to understand its appeal. It has a pale, even tone — somewhere between cream and light tan — with a relatively straight grain that gives it a clean, contemporary look.

It's extremely hard and durable, which makes it an excellent choice for pieces that will see heavy daily use. It's also more stable than some other species, meaning it handles changes in humidity and temperature particularly well — an important consideration for furniture in Australian homes.

Best for: dining tables, desks, outdoor-adjacent spaces Colour: pale cream to light tan Character: straight grain, even texture, clean and contemporary

Spotted Gum

Bold, characterful, unmistakably Australian.

Spotted Gum is not a timber for the faint-hearted — and that's exactly why we love it. It has an interlocked, wavy grain that produces a distinctive fiddle-back or "fiddleback" figure, with colours ranging from pale brown through to deep chocolate, often within the same board.

It's one of Australia's hardest and most durable native timbers, and it carries a sense of place that imported timbers simply can't replicate. Furniture made in Spotted Gum makes a statement — it's bold, organic, and deeply connected to the Australian landscape.

Best for: dining tables, statement pieces, feature furniture Colour: pale brown to deep chocolate, highly variable Character: interlocked grain, strong figuring, dramatic natural variation

How to Choose

Still not sure which timber is right for you? Here are a few simple questions to help guide your decision:

What's the overall tone of your space? Light timbers like American White Oak and Blackbutt work well in bright, airy interiors. Darker timbers like Walnut and Blackwood add warmth and drama to a space.

How much character do you want? If you love consistency and clean lines, Oak or Blackbutt. If you want every piece to feel unique and alive, Walnut, Blackwood, or Spotted Gum.

What's your budget? American Walnut sits at the premium end of our range. American White Oak and Blackbutt are our mid-range options. Blackwood and Spotted Gum sit in between depending on the piece.

What does the furniture need to do? Pieces that will see heavy daily use — like a family dining table — benefit from harder, more stable species like Blackbutt or American White Oak.

The best way to make this decision is to come and see the timbers in person. We keep samples in our Brookvale workshop, and we're always happy to talk through the options with you.
